Thousands rally in Manipur seeking early resolution of Naga political issue

Thousands of people from the Naga communities of Manipur took part in rallies in the state on Wednesday demanding that a resolution be found at the earliest for the “Indo-Naga political issue” on the basis of the Framework Agreement signed by the Union government and NSCN-IM.

The rallies organised by the United Naga Council (UNC), the apex body of Nagas in Manipur, were held in several districts including Senapati, Chandel, Tamenglong, and Ukhrul.

UNC general secretary Ayo Satsang said the rally was organised to expedite the Indo-Naga political issues based on the Framework Agreement signed on August 3, 2015.

“We are of the opinion that the Framework Agreement has entered into a deadlock on the question of flag and constitution. This is very unfair and unjust… Until and unless a solution is brought for the Naga, we will never rest,” the UNC leader said.

The rallies also come in the wake of the demand for a “separate administration” by the Kuki community following ethnic violence in the state that began on May 3.

Satsang warned against any settlement by the Union government, in a bid to address the issues of other communities, that may impact Naga areas.
