With days to go until the US presidential election, Donald Trump has been campaigning in the battleground states that will decide the contest. One region that’s likely to be decisive is the so-called Rust Belt — America’s former industrial heartlands in the the north-east United States, which have seen decades of economic decline. Four years ago the state of Pennsylvania was unexpectedly won by Donald Trump. It was the first time Pennsylvania had backed a Republican presidential candidate in almost 30 years.
