Congress leader P Chidambaram out of jail, first stop Sonia Gandhi's house

Congress leader P Chidambaram walked out of Tihar jail on Wednesday after the Supreme Court granted him bail in the INX Media money laundering case.

Congress leader P Chidambaram, who had been behind bars since August 21 when he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the INX Media corruption case, walked out of the jail on Wednesday.

An elated son Karthi Chidambaram and a sea of Congress workers erupted with joy as the 74-year-old former finance minister walked out of the prison in West Delhi.

After walking out of the jail, Chidambaram paid a visit to Congress acting president P Chidambaram. He was at Sonia Gandhi's residence for 20 minutes.

The development came after earlier in the day the Supreme Court granted him bail in the INX Media case saying the claims by the ED that he can tamper with evidence cannot be accepted on "face value" as he is neither in "political power" nor holds any post in the government.

While granting bail to the 74-year-old former finance minister who has been in custody for 106 days, the Supreme Court restrained him from either giving "any press interviews" or "any public comment" in connection with the case regarding him or other co-accused.

Even as he was barred from speaking on the INX Media case, former finance minister P Chidambaram spoke to media about the current economic situation in the country as he walked out of the Tihar jail.

Chidambaram is being released on bail after he executed bail bonds of Rs 2 lakh with two sureties of like amount.

Chidambaram has been in custody since August 21 when he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the INX Media corruption case. On October 16, the ED arrested him in the separate money-laundering case.

Six days later, on October 22, the Supreme Court had granted him bail in the case lodged by the CBI. On Wednesday, SC granted him bail in the case filed by the ED.
